Gynecology (from the ancient Greek γυνή "woman" and λόγος "speech, science") is a medical discipline that studies the origin, detection, treatment and prevention of diseases of the female genital and reproductive organs. In a narrower sense, gynecology deals with the diseases of the non-pregnant woman, unlike obstetrics - which deals with pregnant women. The field of gynecology also includes the treatment of diseases of the female breast and the corresponding prophylactic examinations (preventive medicine).
The most important methods of examination in gynecology are ultrasound (sonography) for imaging the internal organs, as well as palpation, visual assessment using a speculum and microscope, taking tissue samples and more. For examinations and treatment in the abdomen, the patient sits in a gynecological chair so that the genitals are easily accessible.
Gynecology is one of the operative specialties of medicine. Classical interventions: hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), tubular ligature (ligation of the fallopian tubes for sterilization), laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy (removal of ovarian cysts by operation of the lock through the abdomen) . However, gynecology also covers a wide range of conservative treatments, such as hormone therapy, counseling and contraception, and treatment of couples who have involuntary infertility.
